Lymphedema can be difficult to navigate because swelling may be caused by several overlapping problems, including lymphatic obstruction, venous disease, cancer treatment, infection, surgery, obesity, lipedema or congenital lymphatic conditions. A specialist consultation can help clarify the likely cause, stage the condition, and identify whether conservative therapy, imaging or surgical assessment may be appropriate.

What a lymphedema consultation may clarify

whether swelling is likely to be lymphedema, edema, venous disease, lipedema or another condition;
whether the pattern is primary, secondary, cancer-related, post-surgical, genital, limb-based or mixed;
whether there are warning signs such as recurrent cellulitis, wounds, progressive fibrosis or functional limitation;
whether compression, physiotherapy, manual lymphatic drainage or exercise programmes need adjustment;
whether imaging such as ICG lymphography or lymphoscintigraphy may help guide treatment planning;
whether surgical options such as LVA, vascularised lymph node transfer, liposuction or debulking surgery should be discussed.

When to seek specialist assessment

Specialist review may be useful when swelling is persistent, progressive, asymmetric, associated with heaviness or skin thickening, follows cancer treatment or lymph node surgery, or is complicated by recurrent infection. It may also be appropriate when symptoms affect work, mobility, clothing, exercise, intimacy or quality of life.
