Lymphatic surgery training
Dr Jeremy Sun completed an MOH Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) fellowship in Tokyo focused on comprehensive lymphedema management across all severities, training under Professor Takumi Yamamoto and Professor Akitatsu Hayashi.
The training focus included holistic multi-disciplinary lymphedema care, lymphatic imaging, conservative therapy pathways and lymphatic surgery, including supermicrosurgical lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) and treatment planning for more advanced disease.
This background informs LymphedAsia’s approach: lymphedema is not treated as a single-operation problem, but as a staged condition requiring diagnosis, imaging, pressure-flow assessment, surgical selection, compression therapy and long-term follow-up.

Prevention and health-system research
In addition to peer-reviewed publications, Dr Sun has contributed to research on the health-economic evaluation of lymphedema prevention strategies. A Research Square preprint examines immediate lymphatic reconstruction versus structured surveillance for preventing breast cancer-related lymphedema after axillary surgery. As a preprint, it should be interpreted as work under review rather than a final peer-reviewed guideline.
Cost-Effectiveness of Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction Versus Structured Surveillance for Preventing Breast Cancer–Related Lymphedema After Axillary Surgery. Research Square preprint. DOI: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-8722507/v1.
How this research informs patient care
- Patient selection: not every patient with lymphedema is best treated by the same operation.
- Imaging and mapping: ultrasound and ICG lymphography can help identify remaining lymphatic channels and guide bypass planning.
- LVA quality: in lymphovenous bypass surgery, leakage, pressure gradients and venous reflux can influence how well a bypass functions.
- Prevention: lymphedema prevention after cancer surgery requires weighing immediate reconstruction, structured surveillance, patient risk and local healthcare pathways.
- Advanced disease: severe lymphedema may require staged reconstructive planning rather than a single procedure.
